I graduated from hair school in 1992. I have been a Goldwell educator and for the last 9 years a salon owner. I have 2 issue with licenses the first is that MA does not require any continuing education and the second is that there isn't an opportunity for an assistant/apprentice license/certificate . MA is on the lower end of hours required to graduate......1000 hrs. The issue there is the clock in clock out mentality.....one should only graduate once you have learned/acquired the skills and knowledge to care for clients. I have NEVER hired someone out of hair school that I would have given any consideration to allowing them to take a client. In MA we are not allowed to hire assistants to shampoo if they are not licensed. What ends up happening is that they first spend thousands of dollars for a incomplete education then they must apprentice at our salon for a minimum of 1 year on the average it's two years. According to the writing service data the problem is that the schools and the licensing board promises that they are ready to start taking clients....most can not properly hold a comb never mind understand hair color and or the other chemicals that we use daily. Due to this promise most burn out. We should want our profession to be seen as profession with experts and a license alone will NEVER give us that. We must raise the bar! A side note: Sanitation....I challenge all of the those that have made sanitation comments to go into any salon and look in the cabinets, drawers etc...we all know that most NOT all would fail miserably!!!
