Aside from training, it is well established that students learn better from smarter teachers, but it remains an ongoing reality in the US that vast numbers of certified math teachers are weak at mathematics.<br /><br />This anecdote is personal, but I'm sure it's representative of a broader issue: I was #1 in my major in college, which was mathematics, and taught mathematics in the NYC public schools for several years.
